Supermoon
Tonight, 26 April, there is to be a ‘supermoon’. It happens when the Moon is closest to the earth on the same night as a full Moon and it’s said to be super because it looks bigger and is due to be 30% brighter than usual. I’m hoping that this cosmic happening might bring about some rain. I’m just about OK with watering my pots and seedlings but admit to even watering my garden beds yesterday.
What happened to all those pesky April showers? It seems that we’ve had barely 10% of the average rainfall across the country this month with London having as little as 3%. Reading a bit more into weather patterns though, April isn’t normally a particularly wet month compared to other months of the year. In fact, it is often one of the drier months of the year for most parts of Britain but this month so far has been colder than average too with many frosty nights. Not great for Spring blossoms let alone baby seedlings.
Given the loosening of Covid lockdown and people out enjoying barbecues or fires, we now have a high fire risk on moorland and heathland. Look at the blaze happening on the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland – in April!
My plan, to make the best of the mega moonshine, is to wrap up warm later and join friends around a nearby pub table, holding a glass of wine in my gloved hands and to pray together for rain in May.
